The Spéléo Club du Liban (SCL) was founded in 1951, and it is the oldest caving club in the Middle East. The founding members were Lionel Gorra, Albert Anavy, Raymond Khawam and Sami Karkabi. The club, since its initiation, has been dedicated to speleological activities mainly scientific and sport activities related to caves. Exploration of horizontal and vertical caves in Lebanon has continued systematically for the last 50 years and the SCL has discovered and continuously discovering and exploring some of the largest and most beautiful caves in Lebanon. More than 1000 caves have been explored and reported in Lebanon by the SCL.

The Group for Subterranean Studies and Researches of Lebanon (Groupe d’Etudes et de Recherches Souterraines du Liban – GERSL) is a Lebanese non-profit speleological association, founded in 1988 (Min. Int. 132 / AD 12/5/1988) by Lebanese cavers with the aim to carry out explorations and scientific researches of grottoes, sinkholes and rock-cut caverns in Lebanon and Middle Eastern Countries and specialized in the fields of geology/hydro-geology, history/archaeology, conservation and tourism. The works of the GERSL are documented and published in a scientific Journal, Liban Souterrain, published mostly in French &amp; Arabic since 1988 in addition to some specialized books.&nbsp;
