Shatila, Beirut district

Shatila Studio is Basmeh & Zeitooneh social enterprise. Its Women’s Workshop provides women with opportunities for economic empowerment living in difficult financial circumstances. The members of the workshop received training in embroidery before producing pieces such as scarves, bags and cushion covers. These items were sold through Basmeh and Zeitooneh’s channels, and the women made an income from their work. The program operated alongside the Protection department, giving women direct access to psychosocial support, awareness sessions and counselling, beside their regular shifts in the workshop. Shatila Studio produces bespoke needle art from the heart of the Shatila refugee camp in Beirut. They work to order but have also created their own, unique collection. The studio employs over 100 Syrian and Palestinian refugee women from the camp.
