Mark Hachem Gallery

In 1996 Mark Hachem opens his first contemporary art gallery in the heart of Paris, on the Place de Vosges. A second gallery followed eleven years later, when Hachem inaugurated his Madison Avenue location in New York. Today the spotlight is on Beirut, where the latest addition to Mark Hachem’s triangle of galleries opened in June 2010.Since the successful opening of the Beirut gallery, Hachem’s engagement with the currents of the Middle Eastern market has captured pioneers such as Lebanese photographer Samer Mohdad and painter Mona Trad Dabaji, along with influential Syrian artists Ahmad Moualla, Sabhan Adam, and emerging artist Yaser Safi, as well as aspiring digital artist Ricardo Mbarcko.Over the past two decades, the gallery has captured prestigious artists and initially distinguished itself from other Parisian galleries by its interest in kinetic art. Carwan Gallery

Carwan Gallery was founded in Beirut in 2010 by architects Pascale Wakim and Nicolas Lecompte, and started out as a pop-up art and design venture, the first of its kind in the region. For three years, the duo staged pop-up shows at various locations abroad, aiming to foster a relationship between designers and craftsmen through commissions. This has resulted in more than 15 international creatives finding new artistic inspiration in Middle Eastern crafts to reinvent traditional techniques and create unique contemporary objects.Carwan Gallery has now left the nomadic trail to settle permanently at Gefinor Center, a landmark complex by architect Victor Gruen in the heart of the Lebanese capital. In his early career, Jacques Ouais has forged a solid experience as an art broker and certified consultant, specializing in antiques and high-end modern art. In 1985, he set up a prestigious art gallery at Le Louvre des Antiquaires, Paris. In the 2000s, he returned to his homeland, Lebanon, where he established the Jacques Ouais Gallery. Beirut Art Center (BAC) is a non-profit association, space and platform dedicated to experimental art in Beirut, Lebanon. Beirut Art Center was initiated by Sandra Dagher and Lamia Joreige. Assaf, our patrons, association Philippe Jabre, Cherine Magrabi Tayeb, Ousseimi Foundation, and our sponsors, Banque Libano-Française and Fidus.The aim of BAC is to produce, present and contextualize local and international art researches and cultural practices in a space that is open and active all year long, and free of charge.BAC seeks engagement with various art forms and experiences, and alternative methods of knowledge production and distribution. Galerie Janine Rubeiz 

In 1992, Nadine Majdalani Begdache transformed Dar El Fan, a cultural centre founded by her mother Janine Rubeiz in 1967, into an art gallery named after her. Since then, Galerie Janine Rubeiz has been playing a crucial role in encouraging Lebanese modern and contemporary art, as well as supporting its diffusion on the international level.Over the years, the gallery has expanded its activities and presence by participating in different prestigious art fairs and curated art exhibitions around the world. Furthermore, the gallery has always ensured to invest efforts in promoting the cultural heritage of Lebanon: an exhibition titled "Bitasarof" was organized&nbsp;in 2016&nbsp;with the aim of funding the national library. The proceeds from the exhibited artwork sales were collected in support of the "Lebanese Foundation for the National Library".Today, Galerie Janine Rubeiz is representing a range of internationally influential artists as well as young emerging talents. AUB Art Galleries & Collections

The AUB Art Galleries are two spaces dedicated to hosting exhibitions, artistic events and projects, on and off-campus, and open to the general public. The American University of Beirut has embarked upon a new initiative to play an active role in promoting fine and contemporary art in the region.&nbsp;The very first step taken in this new direction coincided with the generous donation of Dr. Samir Saleeby to AUB. The Rose and Shaheen Saleeby Collection includes paintings by artists of different generations, ranging from Khalil Saleeby (1870-1928) and Cesar Gemayal (1898-1958) to Omar Onsi (1901-1969) and Saliba Douaihy (1912-1994). It also features works by Haidar Hamaoui (b. 1937), Chucrallah Fattouh (b. 1956), and Robert Khoury (b. 1923). The Saleeby donation is the cornerstone upon which AUB will establish a comprehensive collection of modern and contemporary art from the region. Their goal is to integrate this art into the process of learning as much as possible, and to make it available for critical reflection and study.The new initiative commenced with the launching of new art spaces located in and around the AUB campus and the planning of a new museum of art. The exhibition of the works of Khalil Saleeby, which opened in the summer of 2012 at AUB Art Gallery in Sidani Street, was the first of many projects in connection with this initiative. Opera Gallery 

The Opera Gallery adventure began over 25 years ago, in 1994, when their two first exhibition spaces opened simultaneously in Paris and Singapore with the aim of showing international emerging artists alongside masters of Contemporary and Modern Art. Founded in 2015, the Beirut Art Residency is dedicated to supporting the production and dissemination of contemporary art. Their program can be broken down into three main facets: residencies, local exhibitions and public interventions.They provide both emerging and mid-career artists with the time and space to work. Artists are encouraged to venture beyond their usual practice while laying the groundwork for future projects. The outcome of the residency is a cross-cultural exchange, on the one hand bridging local residents of Beirut to a much wider, international discourse surrounding contemporary art, and on the other leaving a lasting impression on residents. The Hamazkayin “Lucy Tutunjian” Art Gallery was founded in 2009 to bring great art to the people of Lebanon and the surrounding region, to promote the works of artists with different backgrounds and styles, and to be an engaging meeting place for every art lover. Connaissance des Arts

Raffi Tokatlian, born in Beirut, Lebanon in 1957, was raised in a family of artists. His grandfather, the only member of his Armenian family to survive the Armenian genocide of 1915, had emigrated to Lebanon. Tokatlian grew up with his grandfather’s stories of the genocide and his escape from Armenia, and they formed the emotional core of his sculptural work. His grandfather was an artist, as was his father, and he recalls that, “Everyday the three of us were painting or drawing, side by side.”Part of Tokatlian’s education as an artist was reading stories of mythology, which lead him to look at the mural of Pompeii and to absorb the classical tradition of Greece and Rome. He was attracted to the art of the Italian Renaissance, particularly the sculptures of Donatello, with their sensuous curving forms. Among the artists Tokatlian notes as inspiring him are the15th century painter of dream-like visions Heironymous Bosch, and a range of Surrealist artists. In Rodin and Giacometti, Tokatlian found artists who used human form to especially expressive ends. He has described his style as “Surrealmythoclassical”, indicating the personal amalgam formed by all of his influences.After completing his university studies in Beirut in 1981, Tokatlian moved to Paris and spent two years at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. There, he concentrated on both fine arts and interior design. During his early years in Europe, he supplemented his studies with visits to artists' studios in France, Italy, Spain, Austria, and Greece. His travels have constantly brought him into touch with art, both ancient and contemporary, that has affected his work. For instance, traveling to Egypt brought him in contact with pharaonic sculpture that proved to be important.Tokatlian found himself especially excited by sculpting, and learned a range of techniques. After returning to Lebanon, he trained and learned more about the lost wax method of bronze casting and creating patinas. Since childhood, drawing has been a central part of Tokatlian’s art, and today it is the way he develops ideas for his sculptures. Since 2000, Tokatlian has created more than 60 bronze sculptures in his studio in Beirut. They combine tragic aspects of his family’s history, with a strong feeling for the existential challenges and spiritual yearnings of humanity.-Opening hours Monday-Friday 11am-6pm

Doop Art Gallery

Doop is an artist-run initiative located in the heart of Bourj Hammoud, the popular northern suburb of Beirut. Its mission is to facilitate the exchange of artworks, concepts, news and arguments between artists and the community.Its founder, Anita Toutikian, is a recognized landmark in the art of the Middle East. Zico House

Zico House is a space for cultural development, for the freedom of expression, for encounters and for creation.&nbsp;Built in 1935 in the heart of Beirut in Spears Street, in the Sanayeh district, this charming traditional house was the family home of Moustapha Yamouth (alias Zico). Lover of the arts and culture, he started using available spaces in the building for performance rehearsals. Soon, he realized the necessity for artists to have a space where they can create and express themselves, and decided to promote and help emerging artists with interesting ideas and projects, especially those who didn’t have the means to produce their own work.-

Aramé Art Gallery - Zaytuna Bay

Aramé Art Gallery was founded in 2003 in Yerevan by Aram Sargsyan (PhD), art collector and promoter. The gallery offers the finest selection of original paintings by internationally renowned Armenian artists whose works are sold exclusively through Aramé Art Gallery. Founded by Joumana Asseily, Marfa’, which means ‘port’ in Arabic, is a contemporary art gallery located in Beirut. Brahim Samaha -Laboratoire d'Art

Laboratoire d’Art is a space dedicated to promoting and encouraging different art disciplines. It was created in 2008 by Brahim Samaha, an Lebanese painter and etcher born in Khenchara on October 29, 1980. Brahim Samaha graduated in 2008 from the Rome Fine Arts Academy and co-founded Stamperia del Tevere in 2004, an art gallery specialized in etching and photography. Upon his return to Lebanon, he created Laboratoire d'art and launched <a href="https://cabrioletfilmfestival.com/">Cabriolet Film Festival</a>, the country’s first outdoor international event of its kind.He presented his work in different solo exhibitions and participated in over twenty collective ones. Some of his paintings are exposed in permanent collections in Rome.Advisor to the Ministry of Culture, Brahim Samaha is also the cultural attaché and a professor at Université Antonine, and the cultural and art consultant to the Gibran National Committee and the Gibran Museum.-

Emmagoss Art Gallery

In 1981 Emmanuel Guiragossian took on the project of publishing a book about the art of his father, one of the Middle East’s most celebrated artists, Paul Guiragossian. Emmagoss was then founded in 1981 as a publishing house and the Paul Guiragossian book, written by Joseph Tarrab was completed in 1982. Many more art books about renowned artists followed, as well as a series of exhibitions curated by Emmanuel in Europe, the USA and the Middle East. In 1991, right after the civil war ended in Lebanon, the Guiragossians decided to give Emmagoss a permanent home by opening an art gallery in Zalqa, a meeting point of both West and East Beirut.It was a long-time dream of both Paul and Emmanuel to create a space and an environment that was made by artists for artists, showcasing modern and contemporary art from around the world. This space would also have an open art studio where resident and visiting artists would educate people, not only on how to create art, but more importantly on how to see and appreciate it.The gallery has since held countless amazing exhibitions of artists from around the world and has collaborated with international Museums and galleries to host exhibitions of great masters such as Picasso, Dali and Miro, as well as multiple emerging Lebanese talents who are established today. After over 15 years of back-to-back art shows and the opening of Emmagoss in Germany, the Guiragossian family decided to focus exclusively on the family artists by representing the works of Paul, Emmanuel, Jean-Paul and Manuella in solo shows and art fairs.The Paul Guiragossian Foundation was also established in 2011 and has been officially running since the start of 2012. The Foundation concentrates on archiving Guiragossian’s works, authenticating, evaluating and restoring them. Gallery Zamaan was founded in March 1990, focusing primarily on reproductions of old postcards from the Middle East. Ashkal Alwan, the Lebanese Association for Plastic Arts, is a non-profit organization based in Beirut, Lebanon. The year 1990 marked the return of peace in Lebanon, which allowed the creation of non-governmental organizations dedicated to the protection, promotion and restoration of the Lebanese Heritage, with the aim to preserve this invaluable wealth for future generations. The Aref El Rayess Foundation aims to preserve, promote, study, and share the legacy of Lebanese painter, sculptor, poet, and writer Aref el Rayess. Aref El Rayess (or Aref Rayess) was a Lebanese painter. Born in Aley (1928), Mount Lebanon, he started his career as a self-taught artist exhibiting for the first time in 1948. He lived in Africa for many years, during which he traveled between Senegal and Paris. In Paris he joined the studios of Fernand Léger, André Lhote, Marcelle Marso and Ossip Zadkine while studying at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. In 1957 he returned to Lebanon, but left again for Florence in 1959 with a scholarship from the Italian government. From 1960 to 1963, he lived in Rome where he went on studying and exhibiting. About Armand Arcache Armand Arcache started working as an auctioneer in Egypt, joining his father in the family business. In 1955, a few years after the destitution of King Faruk, they were appointed by the Egyptian Government to auction the furniture and works of art belonging to the princes’ palaces. Armand Arcache arrived in Beirut in 1965, where he continued his career as the first auctioneer on the Lebanese art market and revealing public auction sales to the Lebanese clientele. Throughout his career, Armand Arcache managed to build a strong network of buyers and sellers, holding major auction sales in Beirut and selling prestigious art collections. Also working as an expert in the 19th century furniture, paintings and works of art, his name became a reference in the regional art market. In 1980, Armand Arcache started to include Lebanese and Middle Eastern Modern and Contemporary Art in his general auction sales. Since the early years of 2000, he organizes with his daughter, Valerie Arcache Aouad, specialized auction sales in that field which promote Lebanese and Middle Eastern artists in the market and help them reach a larger public in the region.&nbsp;About Valerie Arcache Valérie Arcache Aouad has been working as an auctioneer in Lebanon since 1997. After Fathallah Arcache and Armand Arcache, she represents the third generation of a family of auctioneers who first established the business in Egypt in 1935, and then in Lebanon in 1965. Arcache was then the first auction house to be founded in Lebanon. Valerie started her career at Sotheby’s in London and then at Jean Dit Cazaux Commissaires-Priseurs associés in Bordeaux, France, before joining the family business. Valerie holds several auction sales a year including antique and modern furniture, as well as works of art, carpets, and contemporary and modern Middle Eastern paintings. She has been working with private and institutional clients, advising them on acquisitions and sales, collection building, as well as providing valuation services across all categories of art. Arcache remains the market leader to date relying on a unique network of buyers and sellers and a strong knowledge of the art auction market. Valerie actively helps charities by conducting auction sales to the benefit of associations at their fundraising events. Valerie first graduated from HEC-Montreal and holds a Master degree in History of Art from Université de Montréal as well as a Master degree in Marketing from ESA business school.

Located in the heart of Beirut, Dar El-Nimer for Arts and Culture was founded in 2016 as an independent non-profit art foundation for historical, modern and contemporary cultural productions from Palestine and beyond. Dar El-Nimer promotes deep cultural, historical and intellectual awareness by hosting productions by artists, curators, writers, historians, performers and filmmakers, whose works engage with the challenging social realities and political currents shaping the region. Dar El-Nimer is also responsible for showcasing the El-Nimer Collection, the private art collection of the founder, Rami El-Nimer.Three kinds of exhibitions take place at Dar El-Nimer: exhibitions curated from the El-Nimer Collection; commissioned exhibitions in support of artists in different fields of art; and hosted exhibitions from the region and abroad. All exhibitions are accompanied by guided tours and a tailored public program rotating around the exhibited themes.The El-Nimer Collection has been in the making for over forty years. It is a continuously growing collection of items selected for both aesthetical and historical value. The collection sheds light on the rich and complex evolution of the socio-political history of the region through its artistic and cultural productions. It includes pieces spanning around ten centuries of civilisation and hailing from the vast lands that have carried, or interacted, with the legacy of Islamic culture.&nbsp;The collection is primarily built on the taste of the collector and on choosing works that will form meaningful groupings in the collection. The goal is to separate out specific works of art and assemble them in such a way to advance the public’s understanding of art in particular and its evolution. The collection’s highlights include manuscripts, numismatics, ceramics, glass, arms and armour, textiles, photographs, postcards, maps, icons, mother-of-pearl, Orientalist, modern and contemporary paintings. Dar El-Nimer for Arts and Culture presents thematic exhibitions curated from the private collection of the founder. The collection is displayed publicly through these exhibitions which are accompanied by an exhibition catalogue. Midad: The Public and Intimate Lives of Arabic Calligraphy, curated by Rachel Dedman, was the first exhibition from the El-Nimer Collection in 2017. Août gallery is a platform born out of a need for more cultural and artistic spaces in Beirut. Août (August in French) is the month of closure for museums, art institutions and galleries around the world. It is also a personal matter for the founder, Zeid El Amine, who began this journey as an homage to his father who passed away due to the August 4 Beirut blast, hence the name of the gallery. Based in Lebanon, the gallery will be endorsing new and contemporary artists worldwide.&nbsp;The aim is to commemorate the city’s lost art scene and help revive its cultural landscape. Août Gallery is based in Gemmayzeh, which was already an important pillar of the Lebanese art scene. Now partly in ruins but in the midst of reconstruction, it seemed that reopening the doors for art and culture in this neighborhood was the right thing to do, with the hope of forging better days ahead. The gallery draws on international artists, with the aim of establishing a global reach. Takeover

Established in December 2022, Takeover is a project space meant to bridge the gap between art galleries and institutions. As an artist-run space, its main agenda is to host the local artist community, their works and ideas, while focusing on art-practices that work with the image.Located on a beautiful stretch of Abdul Wahab el-Inglizi street, the space used to be a former patisserie kitchen. It is a 21sqm room located on street level and looks out unto it via a floor-to-ceiling vitrine. The previous tenant's kitchen tiles remain and the found mirrors have been reappropriated into the new design of the space. This sums up the spirit of Takeover - appreciating the local and regional talents we have, making the best out of the current situation and rethinking the present while heading towards an imagined bright future.
